WHAT MAKES MANHATTAN?

If there was no obstacle, every weekend we went to Manhattan.

For me time to stretch my legs. I love walking home from work when I worked at the Turks and Caicos Islands. As soon as I stayed in New York, I was at best walked 2 km per week.

Most of the time I stayed inside, whether at home or in a library while in New York. Most of the time New York was cold even in the spring. I never wandered more than an hour. I was not the brave one who conquered the weather.

Sometimes we took a walk around Time Square, sometimes walking longer than usual. We tried to do it every week, but our plans were not as smooth as we thought. Either the weather was cold or one of us was sick or snow or storm.

We preferred to stay home, dry and warm.

When the weather was better, we walked a long way to Central Park and back to Time Square. Time Square never desert from visitors. Each seat filled. People stood in every empty space that exists.

Plenty of entertainment from morning to night. Artists with various capabilities met at the Time Square. Musicians, dancers, pantomimes and many others show off their talents with the desire that someone is interested in their performance.

Many people think New York is the best city in the world. The city is full of people from different countries of the world.

Manhattan is a major part of five areas in New York City. Long time ago Manhattan populated by native Americans of Lenape when first discovered by European explorers. Now Manhattan is a major part of five areas in New York City.

Although Manhattan is a thin and long island, in fact, represents New York City for the world. Whenever I told my family or friends about New York City, their faces changed with a dreamlike expression. They told me that in their minds all the beauty in the city. Skyscrapers, Broadways shows, landmarks, shopping centers and parks. As they seen on TV or movies.

A city that never sleeps

No matter morning or night, there’s always something to do in Manhattan. The city is full of life.

Many things we did when we went to Manhattan. We split our time between wandering around Central Park, seeing the High Park, admiring Union Station or seeing people skating or admiring stores windows with their unique décor and more.

Many reasons why people live in this place

People love to live in Manhattan because of access to work, friends, family, food, shopping, nightlife, activities, culture, schools and much more. In New York City people can go anywhere, do whatever they want without having a car, paying for car insurance, gas, etc.

There are others who said that although they could afford to buy apartments in most areas of Manhattan, they would rather stay in a quieter place. They prefer areas like Brooklyn and the neighborhood.

Despite the cold weather I always looked forward to our trip to Manhattan.

We parked the car, either on the side of the road (when we found free parking) or a parking area near the church in Time Square. We took a stroller out of the car and wrapped the little man in a warm blanket. Then we were ready to explore Manhattan.

When I first came here in 2010, I did not explore much around Time Square and surroundings. I mostly walked back and forth in the Central Park area where I rented an apartment. Most of the time I was in and out of the park in the morning, noon or before returning to the apartment.

Ugly side of Manhattan

New York City like most major cities in the world, there are also other bad sides.

As I walked down the street or the street, day or night, there was an unpleasant smell from the dumpster on the sidewalk. Graffiti on the walls, rolling doors, road signs and other public places. The uneven pedestrian street made me stumble several times. Homeless people asked for money.

One occasion my friend with the good intentions packed up some lunch boxes for the homeless. They refused when she gave it to them. Maybe they did not trust the food she gave them? Maybe they preferred other types of food?

On different time, we bought pizza (8 slices in a box). We ate some and there were some slices still in the box. She gave it to the homeless (lying on the street). One of them received and tossed the pizza box on the other side. We shocked and did not understand what was happening.

I confused and upset (felt sorry for my friend). Apparently the homeless did not want to food but they wanted money for other affairs.

Nonetheless, this is the Manhattan side that makes Manhattan is Manhattan.

Energy and atmosphere attract people from all over the world to come and witness the diversity of this tiny island.
